When you name your band “Sexytime,” even if it’s a half joke, you set a bar for yourself. You give your audience, especially first time listeners, immediate pre-conceptions of what constitutes the soundtrack for an experience so universal yet subjective to individual experience that you risk either relying on tropes and clichés or worse alienating anyone who’s too much a “freak” or “prude” in the bedroom. Luckily for this electro duo…WE ARE ALL FREAKS AND WE DON’T CARE. Somehow, Sexytime knew this & threw pretense out the window for the new Naked Poetry EP. They didn’t make a club record, they went straight for the afterparty. They want you to find an empty room and hook-up. Just like they do on the EP’s cover. Instead of compulsive 4 on the floor jack beats, it’s the breezy synth work here that drives the tone. It’s telling the girls to wind down a bit and lulling them into a suggestive trance. Guys, 1/2 your work is done for you. No worries, the beats are still there. The tempos are just a bit slower & the bass kicks a bit more intellectual, penetrating gently & taking a backseat to the original samples and atmospheric sounds that are determined to hypnotize. And don’t worry ladies, if your man just ain’t quite feelin’ it, if he’s had a few too many, the seductive female vocal samples should wake his libido. Just whisper in his ear & repeat with them on the title track …”in my dreams, in my dreams, in my dreams”. Gets me goin’ anyway… Sexytime is made up of 2 long time friends from different worlds. Hailing from the West Coast is MiM0SA, who garnered attention last year for the sample work on his Sanctuary album. And from the East we have Sleepyhead ,with a deft grasp of beat making. That the 2 could pull their styles together in a short amount of time and turn out a product that is not only original, but achieves a goal they set with their tongues in their cheeks, is really something.
